Oliver Twist is getting a modern makeover thanks to Sky Cinema, which is bringing the classic story by Charles Dickens back to our screens in early 2021 with a new adaptation that swaps Victorian-era London for the modern-day city. Twist stars newcomer Raff Law — son of Jude Law and Sadie Frost — in the title role alongside an all-star British cast, including Sir Michael Caine, Lena Headey, David Walliams, and Rita Ora.
In this modern retelling, Oliver is reinvented as a notorious graffiti artist creating Banksy-esque art across the capital when a chance encounter with a gang of grifters sees him caught up in a high-stakes heist to steal a priceless painting for a master thief, Fagin (Caine), and his business partner, Sikes (Headey). As we see in the trailer, Ora's Artful Dodger invites Oliver to meet with her boss, Fagin, before suggesting that they train him up, presumably, to create a replica of the painting they intend to steal from Losberne (Walliams).
Speaking about his role, Law commented, "I'm excited to play such a well-loved literary character, and I'm looking forward to working with Martin Owen [the director] to bring to life his new take on the character in modern-day London."
"I couldn't be more excited to take on the iconic character of Sikes from Oliver Twist," Headey said in a statement. "Flipping roles without apology or character softening is a brilliant way to breathe new life into established materials and bring it to new audiences."
"Twist is Dickens' classic tale as you've never seen it before," Sarah Wright, director of Sky Cinema and acquisitions at Sky U.K. & Ireland, said in a press release for the film. "Daring, modern and packed full of the greatest British talent, this co-production demonstrates Sky's ambition for original films. I can't wait for our customers to see it."
